IEG MAPS

At the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG), a server has been made available for digital historical maps since November 2000. The server URL is http://www.ieg-maps.de.

The maps on the IEG-MAPS webserver are general digital maps on German and European history from 1378, dealing with the topics of politics, economics, administration and travel. They are consistently high-definition maps produced with computer support, which have been developed by historians or under the academic supervision of historians and manually digitized by cartographers.

Without exception, the maps provided in IEG-MAPS are newly produced and constitute a comprehensive information set, which is nonetheless capable of being extended and which in some cases has been developed into comprehensive historical-geographical information systems.

During the development phase between 2001 and 2006, the map server project was funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation in Düsseldorf.
Initiator and project manager was: Andreas Kunz
