Equal opportunities and gender equality

Equal opportunities and gender equality

The IEG supports the aims of the Leibniz Association regarding equality of opportunity and those of the German Research Foundation regarding research-oriented equality and diversity standards. The IEG actively endeavours to attain and secure the equality standards provided for in the General Law on Equal Treatment (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz - AGG), in the State Equality Law (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz - LGG) of Rhineland‐Palatinate and in the Federal Equality Law (Bundesgleichstellungsgesetz - BGleiG) in accordance with Article 3 of the German Constitution (Grundgesetz - GG). This includes active measures to counteract all types of disadvantage and discrimination, the improvement of entry and promotion conditions for women, the raising of the proportion of women in positions of leadership, redressing gender-specific under-representation and the avoidance of structural discrimination. The Institute endeavours to make it easier for all employees to combine professional and family commitments. Establishing balance and combinability of professional and family responsibilities is viewed as a leadership issue. 2016 the IEG received the TOTAL E-QUALITY Award.

Currently, there is gender balance in the leadership positions at the IEG. In the case of academic staff with doctorates, the situation is close to gender balance; and in the case of positions for young academics engaged in doctoral research, women are in the majority.

The IEG facilitates additional training as a means of career advancement and to promote equality. It offers flexible working hours and has special provisions in place regarding the care of dependents during family emergencies. The IEG is continuously endeavouring to improve the combinability of professional and family commitments for its staff.

The equal opportunity officer supports and advises the leadership of the Institute and the Institute staff in all matters pertaining to equality of opportunity. She works in close cooperation with the human resources department, among other things in the drafting of a plan for the promotion of women and the drafting of certification measures.

The equal opportunity officer and her deputy participate in the working group on equal opportunity and diversity of the Leibniz Association and in the state working group of equal opportunity officers of Rhineland-Palatinate.
