Correspondence and Controversy – the Correspondence Networks of Matthias Flacius Illyricus (in preparation)

The aim of this project is to research the Europe-wide correspondence of the Croatian scholar, theologian, church historian, philologist and philosopher Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520–1575) including prefaces and dedications, which were primarily addressed to members of the aristocracy.
The correspondence of the Croatian scholar, theologian, church historian, philologist and philosopher Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520–1575) was one the most extensive of his period. Researching this correspondence promises to shed further light on the emergence of confessional differentiations in the 16th century. He had contacts far beyond the theological sphere, corresponding, for example, with astronomers and physicians. It is planned to research the Europe-wide correspondence of Flacius including prefaces and dedications, which were primarily addressed to members of the aristocracy. To realise this project (supervised by Irene Dingel and conducted by Luka Ilić), an application for third-party assistance is being prepared, which will include digital expertise through cooperation with the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel.
