Ulrich Pfeil, Senior Research Fellow at the IEG, will give an online lecture on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. on the topic "150 Jahre Erinnerung an den Deutsch-Französischen Krieg von 1870/71 [150 Years of Commemoration of the Franco-German War of 1870/71]". The event is organized by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung RLP in cooperation with the Institut für Europäische Geschichte (IEG) Mainz and the Institut Français Mainz. 150 years ago the Franco-Prussian War raged, which ended with the proclamation of the German Reich and the defeat of France in 1871. Today it is mostly considered a forgotten war, since memories of the two world wars dominate in Germany and France. A closer look in both countries, however, quickly reveals the manifold traces of the conflict, not only in the then annexed Alsace-Lorraine. In this lecture, the handling of this course of arms in Germany and France will be examined and the question asked how memory on both sides of the Rhine was mutually influenced. In addition, the site of commemoration Versailles will be considered as an indicator of the state of Franco-German relations, which for decades was a symbol of "hereditary enmity" but is now considered a symbol of Franco-German reconciliation. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Pfeil is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the IEG, where he is working on the research project "The historical dimension of reconciliation".
