The International and Interdisciplinary Conference »Sakralarchitektur, Ritus und Musik zwischen Byzanz und dem Westen (6.–15. Jahrhundert) | Sacred Architecture, Rite and Music between Byzantium and the West (Sixth to Fifteenth Century)«, organised by Prof. Dr. Klaus Pietschmann and Dr. Tobias C. Weißmann (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz)as part of the research project »CANTORIA – Music and Sacred Architecture«, will be held from 21–23 January 2021. Foto: Cappella Palatina in Palermo, Blick auf die Westwand und Muqarnas-Gewölbe © Swiridoff-Verlag The conference is held in cooperation with the Leibniz ScienceCampus »Byzantium between Orient and Occident« (Mainz/Frankfurt) and the Leibniz Institute of European History and focuses on the interplay of sacred architecture, rite and music for the first time in a comparative perspective between Byzantium and the West from late antiquity to the late Middle Ages and examines transfer processes between the Byzantine Empire and the European Mediterranean region. Emphasis is placed on the sacred space in its performative function within the liturgical and ceremonial context. Keynotes: Alexander Lingas (London): Sung Text, Notated Music, and Urban Liturgical Space in Later Byzantium Vasileios Marinis (New Haven): Reconsidering the Communion of the Apostles in Byzantine Art Christian Freigang (Berlin): Notre Dame in Paris als Klangraum im Mittelalter The conference will be held in digital form.
