Workshop "Performance of Achievement: Practices of Human Differentiation from 1900 to the Present"
Organizers: Mita Banerjee, Gregor Feindt, Johannes Paulmann, Benjamin Wihstutz. Venue: Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte (IEG) Mainz, Alte Universitätsstraße 19, Mainz The workshop "Performance of Achievement" considers achievement as a dynamic practice of human differentiation in the long 20th century and in different historical constellations, societies and world regions. Fundamental to this is the assumption that achievement has historically evolved, is geographically variable, and is socially contingent. The workshop specifically examines the performance, representation and communication of achievement in individual situations and by individuals, as well as its effect on societies over a long period of time. The workshop thus connects to the fruitful interdisciplinary research on practices and discourses of achievement in recent years and asks how achievement became historically entrenched as a principle of distinction among people through performances. The workshop brings together researchers from American Studies, History, Theater Studies, German Studies, and Cultural Studies for an open workshop. The research areas of work, aging as well as dis/ability enable interdisciplinary exchange on perfomance and achievement and provide an overall perspective on practices of human differentiation. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes to allow sufficient time for discussion.
