Book presentation: "Die Kirche und die Täter nach 1945" edited by Nicholas John Willams and Christoph Picker
Venue: Foyer of the Landesbibliothekszentrum, Otto-Mayer-Str. 9, 67346 Speyer, Germany. Organiser: Landesbibliothekszentrum/Pfälzische Landesbibliothek in cooperation with the Protestant Academy of the Palatinate The volume "Die Kirche und die Täter nach 1945. Schuld – Seelsorge – Rechtfertigung.", of the series »Veröffentlichungen des Instituts für Europäische Geschichte Mainz«, edited by former IEG staff members Nicholas John Willams and Christoph Picker will be presented on Tuesday, 18 October, 7 pm. About the book: There is controversial discussion about how the two large churches dealt with Nazi perpetrators after 1945. The then Palatinate church president Hans Stempel cared for perpetrators imprisoned and sentenced abroad and also spoke up for them politically. At the Protestant Academy of the Palatinate, Stempel's involvement is examined and historically. The volume "Die Kirche und die Täter nach 1945" offers initial results - and raises new questions: Where do the boundaries run between pastoral care, partisanship and politics? Did the churches take care of the perpetrators and neglect the victims? What role did they play in coming to terms with the Nazi past? What is the relationship between forgiveness, repentance, punishment and rehabilitation? The theologian and historian Prof. Dr. Katharina Von Kellenbach (Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin / St. Mary's College of Maryland) will introduce the new publication.
