Conference "'Forderungen der Freiheit'. Christliche Linksintellektuelle im Kontext. Politische, kulturelle, kirchlich-religiöse und transnationale Konstellationen in Ost- und Westdeutschland, 1960–2000"
Benedikt Brunner, research associate at the IEG, is organizing the conference at the Catholic Academy in Dresden together with Sarah Jäger, Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena and Gabriel Wolfes, Chemnitz University of Technology. Conference Venue: Catholic Academy of the Diocese of Meißen-Dresden Christian-socialized, affiliated and associated intellectuals such as Walter Dirks, Helmut Gollwitzer, Ida Görres or Dorothee Sölle have significantly shaped the political, cultural and ecclesiastical-religious debates of their time. Germany is not a special case in this respect, as the study of Emmanuel Mounier, Harvey Cox, Gabriel Vahanian and John Robinson, for example, shows. An important research desideratum, which the conference would like to explore in an interdisciplinary way, is the question of the networks in which these Christian left-wing intellectuals moved and the question of which topics Christian left-wing intellectuals particularly focused on. The conference will concentrate on a period that deliberately includes the 1990s and thus breaks new academic ground. The question will be how this period of upheaval was intellectually interpreted and processed. In particular, the prominent personalities from the GDR's civil rights movement have not yet been inscribed in Germany's intellectual history.
