The panel discussion on the topic of "Sustainability" is part of the series "Reden wir über Europa!" (Let's talk about Europe!), in which the IEG and the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (LpB) take a look at current issues and crises in Europe and discuss them with an emphasis on their historical dimensions: What knowledge resources does the past hold in order to understand current crises and better steer future developments? With: Katrin Eder, Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy and Mobility of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, and Annette Kehnel, University of Mannheim, author of the award-winning book "Wir konnten auch anders. A brief history of sustainability" Moderation: Bernhard Gißibl, IEG Based on Annette Kehnel's book "Wir konnten auch anders. Eine kurze Geschichte der Nachhaltigkeit" (We could also do otherwise. A Brief History of Sustainability), the question is asked where sustainability as an economic and social principle comes from and what, for example, was already practised in the Middle Ages. With Katrin Eder, the political-practical dimensions, problems and potentials of the term will be looked at, based on her experiences at local and state level.
