Irene Dingel in conversation with SWR 2

On the occasion of the Luther Year in Worms 2021, IEG Director Irene Dingel talks with SWR 2 about the famous reformer, the way Luther was received, his importance as a figure of identification and the true origin of the phrases attributed to Luther.


Due to his position as a singular historical figure, Luther was immensely popular and heroised early on. Ultimately, every epoch tried to reflect itself in different ways in his figure. Luther's alleged famous statement before the Reichstag in Worms exactly 500 years ago, "Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders. Gott helfe mir. Amen", is today a famous dictum for sincerity and courage.
