On Saturday, 17 September, after a two-year break due to the pandemic, the IEG once again hosted an Open Day. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests had the opportunity to get to know the Domus Universitatis, the staff and scholarship holders. A varied programme consisting of guided tours through the building, an exhibition, short lectures on the Science Sofa as well as learning and hands-on stations for the whole family awaited the visitors.
The garden of the IEG was filled punctually at 11 a.m. and the scientists presented their current research projects in short lectures. Afterwards, they answered questions from the audience. Despite the wind at 15 °C and intermittent rain showers, many people gathered around the red Science Sofa of the Mainzer Wissenschaftsallianz. Between and during the lectures, they were warmed with coffee, tea and cake.
Inside the house, the lecture series "From the Cold War to European Upheaval. The Institute of European History 1950-1990" on the first floor, an exhibition invited interested visitors to take a short journey through the history of the research institute. There was also a guided tour of the exhibition at 1 pm and 4 pm. Also on the first floor, children could approach the research on historical events in a playful way. Project manager Constanze Buyken introduced them to the DigiKAR project, Digital Map Workshop.
During the guided tours through the "Domus Universitatis", the participants learned about the history of the historic building and gained insights into the workrooms, the library and the living and work spaces of the scholarship holders and guest researchers.
The "mobile printing workshop" was also very popular. With the Gutenberg Museum's mobile printing press, visitors - especially young ones - produced their own prints. This year, the IEG, the unicorn and Mainz Cathedral were very popular motifs.
Until shortly before 5 p.m., visitors came through the entrance door of the IEG to admire the historic building with its red and white façade from the inside. The IEG looks back on an extremely successful Open Day and is already looking forward to the next one.
