IEG welcomes new director Prof. Dr Nicole Reinhardt
On 1 October, Prof. Dr. Nicole Reinhardt will take up her post as the new director of the IEG's Department of Occidental History of Religion. The IEG extends a warm welcome to her!

Until September 2022, Nicole Reinhardt was Professor of Early Modern European History at the University of Durham, England. She researches the religious and political culture of Europe in the early modern period, especially in Italy, France and the Iberian Peninsula.

The appointment is linked to the professorship in Modern History with a focus on European History of Religion at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Nicole Reinhardt succeeds Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dingel, who left after 18 years as director of the IEG's Department of Occidental History of Religion on 1 April 2022.

Together with the IEG, the Minister for Science and Health of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Clemens Hoch, is pleased that Nicole Reinhardt has taken up her post: "The IEG not only fulfils an important function within the Leibniz Association as the Leibniz Institute in the field of historical sciences, with its supra-regional visibility it is also an indispensable component of Mainz as a centre of science. Its research on dealing with difference in Europe is aimed at an issue of great importance to society as a whole. I am therefore very pleased that Prof. Reinhardt, such a proven historian, has been recruited for this position."

Prof. Dr. Johannes Paulmann, Director of the IEG's Department of Universal History, says: "With Nicole Reinhardt, the IEG is gaining a renowned researcher. Her international experience makes her the ideal colleague for our European research institute." Regarding her future field of work, Reinhardt expresses anticipation of supervising research students working on comparative questions on early modern European religious and cultural history in its world relations: "Passion for European history has shaped my professional and personal life. It is therefore a unique opportunity and challenge to be able to contribute my international experience to such an outstanding research institute in the heart of Europe and to develop new questions on the history of Europe in cooperation with highly qualified post-graduate researchers.
