Conference report on the Leibniz Conference "German History, European Future?" published
In April 2025, the IEG in Mainz hosted a conference entitled »German History, European Future? The Value of a Controversial Past for Non-University Research after 1949 and 1989«. The detailed conference report by Manfred Sing has now been published on H-Soz-Kult.
The conference focused on the establishment and development of non-university historical research institutions in Germany since the decisive political upheavals of 1945 and 1989. The discussion centred on the political independence of these institutes and their role in coming to terms with a controversial past – always against the backdrop of a European future perspective.

For the first time, the conference systematically focused on the founding and reorientation narratives of numerous non-university institutes belonging to the Leibniz Association, offering new insights into the complex history of these important research institutions.
