| "This dissertation examines the entanglement of religion and economy in early modern Lima, the principal hub of Spain’s southern American empire. Drawing on notarial records and other archival sources, it shows how nuns, clergymen, and inquisitors—agents of faith—treated financial activity as integral to their devotional lives. The case of Juan de Robles, a cathedral steward and Inquisition treasurer who prospered in trade despite official bans, illustrates how clerical entrepreneurship became normalized, and how the supposed boundary between sacred duty and material profit was a later historiographical construct. By demonstrating that economic pursuits and devotional obligations were mutually constitutive, this work reframes the moral economy of colonial Lima and reveals how religious normativity underpinned its commercial culture."
