Transregional Modernisation: Iranian Intellectuals in Europe, 1870s to 1930s

My project examines the intellectual and ideological genealogy of the Iranian intellectuals in Europe from the 1870s to the 1930s. It analyzes the evolution of modernist and nationalist ideas among them and how Western European modernity was transmitted to Iran through these intellectuals. My project will offer fresh insights into how the interactions between European and Iranian intellectuals fundamentally shaped the development of modern discourses of Islam and Shi’ism in Europe as well as the trajectory of Iranian modernization.
