"My dissertation project is a study of Cuban-Spanish relations from 1975-1999 as a lens through which to understand the Cuban regime’s durability and capacity to evolve in the face of the crisis decade that followed the collapse of the USSR. Using archival sources hitherto untouched in the very limited literature on the topic, I attempt to show how Cuba laid the groundwork for the reforms of the 1990s during the middle of the Cold War through rapprochement with Western European states, and in particular Spain. This is both relevant to emerging scholarship on late and post-Cold War Cuba, post-transition Spain, and broader scholarship on the durability of Communist regimes within political science." |
