Review of “Mobility and Differentiation” published

At the conclusion of the research program “A Europe of Differences,” one of the four volumes published was “Mobility and Differentiation: On the Construction of Differences and Belonging in Early Modern Europe,” edited by IEG Director Johannes Paulmann, Sarah Panter, and Thomas Weller, both research associates at the IEG. A review has now appeared on H-Soz-Kult. David Schulte describes the volume in his review as a “[…] successful extension of the study of historical mobility discourses […]”.

He concludes: “Overall, the volume is an important enrichment for historical migration and mobility research, without attempting to present a new master narrative at the same time. Rather, the editors and contributors succeed, through findings that are rarely presented explicitly and often implicitly, in relativizing older narratives—for example, the idea of a largely immobile premodern era—and in linking migration and mobility within a broader context. Precisely by bringing together theoretical perspectives and case studies, the edited collection offers opportunities for connection to a wide range of research projects.”
