Forschungsthema: Portraying Cathay and Folangji: Chinese and Italian Ethnography in the Sino-Iberian Exchange, ca. 1520-1650
"My research primarily focuses on Sino-Italian politics and ethnography within the context of early modern Sino-Iberian exchange. I mainly work on the period between 1500 and 1650, using primary sources in a variety of languages, including Latin, Classical Chinese, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Against the backdrop of Ming maritime reform and Iberian colonial expansion, my dissertation investigates how authors in Coastal China and the Italian Peninsula used ethnography as a tool of political messaging and how they mediated exchanges between the Ming and Habsburg Empires."
