Forschungsthema: The First World War and the Politics of Rehabilitation: Military Disability Between Late Russian Empire and Early Soviet State
"PhD project examines how First World War Russian "mutilated warriors" (as war invalids were called by contemporaries) were publicly problematized and subjected to medical rehabilitation aimed at restoring their productivity and independence. Using 1914–1918 archival and periodical sources, I trace the emergence, clinical management, and eventual discursive disappearance of this category within the intersecting logics of state pragmatism, humanitarian charity, and professional medicine. The analysis shows how wartime rehabilitation practices, though shaped by imperial crises, left lasting institutional and conceptual imprints on Soviet civilian medicine after 1918. Ultimately, the project illuminates both the historical contingency of disability as a category and the enduring biopolitical tensions in modern medical governance."
