In addition to the fellowship program, the IEG also invites researchers as visiting fellows and senior research fellows to live and work in Mainz, and to participate in the IEG’s research activities.
The Senior Research Fellowship Programme enables renowned scholars from abroad to come to Mainz. At the institute, they have the opportunity to pursue their own research projects and to network and exchange ideas with researchers at the IEG. This allows existing collaborations to be implemented and deepened, as well as new joint research projects to be planned for the future. Senior Research Fellows at the IEG usually come to Mainz for one to six months. They are provided with their own shared office at the Institute and a guest apartment in the center of Mainz.
The IEG also accepts visiting fellows who receive scholarships from other funding organizations or who are self-financed. Depending on availability, researchers can live in the Institute building (dormitory) or in the guest apartment. They are invited to take advantage of all the Institute has to offer and to participate in its research activities.
“My experience was truly excellent. I was given my own office, and the institute was open 24/7, which I REALLY appreciated and which in my case meant that although my stay was short and I was able to come less than 5 days a week, I got a whole lot done in Mainz. […] I have only praise also here. Not only was I made welcome when I arrived – I really appreciated the talks with Johannes and Nicole, also at my departure. But also, the organization was on all levels (prep; flat & keys; library; the financial side) without hitch. I should also mention that the flat I was given was excellent (location; size; amenities) and excellently maintained.”
— Prof. Dr. Cyrus Schayegh, Senior Research Fellow 2024
“The events at the institute are both plentiful and of a high intellectual standard. In fact, IEG staff put on so many interesting conferences and reading groups that I regretted not having more time to attend them. The IEG offered a congenial work environment. I was spoilt for choice in terms of work spaces, which included my own office, a desk in the library, and the apartment). I felt the Institute achieved the right balance between giving SRFs space to work on their projects and integrating them into the community so that they don’t feel isolated during their stay in Mainz.”
— Dr. Jasper Heinzen, Senior Research Fellow 2025
