In the first episode IEG editor Vanessa Weber and IEG Alumna Dr. Corinna Schattauer talk about Schattauers book “Female agency and mobility. Commercial beauty contests in Germany, 1909 to 1933”. They explore the tension between patriarchal structures, the expectations of male judges and the surprising role beauty competitions played as instruments of female agency.
In the second episode Dr Christiane Kormann, Head of Publications at the IEG, and further IEG researcher PD Dr Gregor Feindt talk about Feindts book “Baťas Menschen. Rationalisierung, ‚social engineeringʻ und Differenzierung in der tschechoslowakischen Unternehmensstadt Zlín, 1918–1948”. They discuss how a small shoe company from Czechoslovakia grew into an empire, shaping people’s lives, surviving political systems and leaving its mark on an entire city.
