Living and Working
This page provides an initial overview of our accommodation options. The Fellowship Office will support and assist you before, during and after your stay at our institute. We have compiled some helpful information about accommodation at the institute and living in Mainz that you receive upon your arrival. Dormitory in the Institute Building
The IEG is located in the heart of Mainz, in the Old University building. The residence for our PhD and Postdoc fellows is located in the same building. There are 21 rooms spread over two floors. The floors function as a shared flat with a communal kitchen and bathroom. Each room is equipped with a bed, desk, wardrobe, washbasin, telephone and internet connection.
The monthly rent for IEG PhD and Postdoc Fellows is €175. This includes all additional costs such as heating, electricity, water, cleaning, bed linen and towels, and telephone. The 21 rooms in the dormitory range in size from approximately 10 square metres to 20 square metres.
The dormitory has a few partner rooms for fellows staying with their partner. Those rooms have a double loft bed and the rent is 270 Euro/month.
Unfortunately, the institute building is not designed to accommodate families with children. Please contact us if you have any questions about your family situation.
Visiting fellows can also obtain a room in the dormitory. The rent for them is €300 per month plus final cleaning.
Guest Apartments
On the edge of Mainz’s old town and a 15-minute walk from the institute building, two guest apartments are available for our senior research fellows and visiting fellows. These are fully equipped with a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. All utilities, internet and weekly cleaning with bed linen change are included.
Accommodation is provided free of charge as part of the Senior Research Fellowship Programme. Visiting fellows can rent the apartment for €750/month, including all utilities, plus a final cleaning fee.
Office Space
The second building used by the IEG has office space on the fourth floor for Phd and Postdoc fellows, senior research fellows and visiting fellows.
