The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz invites applications for

The researcher will work on a sub-project (by writing a doctoral dissertation) within the collaborative project "The Historicity of Democracy in the Arab and Muslim World". In this project, the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin, the Center for Contemporary History (ZZF) in Potsdam, the IEG in Mainz, and partner institutions in Tunis and Amman join forces. The project is fund-ed in the programme Leibniz Collaborative Excellence by the Leibniz Association.
Due to the duration of the project funding, the position is limited to 36 months and dedicated to the writing of a doctoral dissertation. The place of work is Mainz; travel funds for archival research are available. The salary grade accords to the German government’s scheme (TV-L E13, 65%).
About the project:
The collaborative project studies deliberative institutions and practices in the Middle East and North Africa as well as the nature of democratic impulses in the region since the nineteenth century. The advertised position will be part of the sub-project "Self-Determination under Occupation. The Formation of Modern Egypt, 1879–1956", which is located at the IEG. The doctoral dissertation will study the development of democratic structures in Egypt in the course of the decolonization process. A special focus will be on the negotiation of political, cultural, gender and religious aspects in this process – against the background of the Ottoman past and the lasting British influence. Possible research questions are the construction of citizenship, the position of minorities, the functioning of the parliament, and the debates about the constitution.
Your tasks:
- development and elaboration of a doctoral research project in the context of the sub-project in close cooperation with the project leader at IEG (Dr. habil. Manfred Sing)
- archive and literature research
- participation in the activities of the HISDEMAB joint project (internal meetings, colloquia, seminars, and conferences)
- writing of a doctoral dissertation
- contribution of a chapter to a collective book related to the HISDEMAB joint project.
Requirements:
- above-average master degree in History or a related discipline (Islamic Studies, Political Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology or a neighbouring discipline) with a focus on the modern history of the Middle East and North Africa
- excellent command of the Arabic, English, and German languages (for non-German speaking applicants: Certificate of sufficient German skills or a strategy to improve them)
- good communication and team skills
- capacity to work autonomously and in a structured way.
