IEG Alumni is for everyone who experienced their time at the IEG not only as a research stay, but as a formative and memorable chapter. More than 1,700 international scholars have conducted research at the institute. Many of them not only worked together but also lived in the Domus Universitatis, sharing everyday life and creating lasting memories. To ensure that these connections do not end when leaving Mainz, IEG Alumni was established – a network that enables exchange, reunions and shared reminiscing, while also offering space for new encounters and future collaboration.

Alumni Testimonials

“The contact with scholars working at the IEG has been very helpful in finding the necessary support to work on my dissertation. Especially helpful has been being in touch with my mentor […]. Other doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and professors at the IEG have provided me with an exciting intellectual setting to learn and share ideas and historical knowledge.”

“One aspect of the academic programme that I found particularly important was the emphasis on collaborative discussion and exchange of ideas. The opportunity to discuss methods and share insights with other researchers working on related projects was incredibly rewarding and allowed me to gain new perspectives on my work and refine my approach in new and interesting ways.”

“My experience was truly excellent. I was given my own office, and the institute was open 24/7, which I REALLY appreciated and which in my case meant that although my stay was short and I was able to come less than 5 days a week, I got a whole lot done in Mainz. […] I have only praise also here. Not only was I made welcome when I arrived – I really appreciated the talks with Johannes and Nicole, also at my departure. But also, the organization was on all levels (prep; flat & keys; library; the financial side) without hitch. I should also mention that the flat I was given was excellent (location; size; amenities) and excellently maintained.”

“The excellent conditions at the IEG have not only helped me to advance enormously with the writing, but have provided me with incredible emotional and material support for this final phase of the writing. I am very grateful to the IEG Doctoral Fellowship programme for offering me this space and support to finish the final phase of my current research. My stay at the IEG has also served me to establish contact with several researchers and institutions in the German academic environment whose existence I was unaware of. […] Ultimately, my presence at the IEG has also helped me to come into contact with new lines of research, theoretical tools and new methodologies that have influenced my research and will do so in the future. Although I was already familiar with the tools of Global and Transnational History, the presence in a non-Spanish academic environment has allowed me to expand the horizons of my research towards less nationally based, more global and comparative perspective.”

“The events at the institute are both plentiful and of a high intellectual standard. In fact, IEG staff put on so many interesting conferences and reading groups that I regretted not having more time to attend them. The IEG offered a congenial work environment. I was spoilt for choice in terms of work spaces, which included my own office, a desk in the library, and the apartment). I felt the Institute achieved the right balance between giving SRFs space to work on their projects and integrating them into the community so that they don’t feel isolated during their stay in Mainz.”

Writing History – our publication series and IEG blog

Our VIEG publication series features a wide range of works from the fields of history and religious studies, as well as related disciplines—many of them authored by current staff members and former fellows. As a small token of our appreciation for your time at the IEG, we invite you to select a book from the series as a gift. We would also be delighted if, upon completion of your own publication, you would leave a copy with us—contributing to the ongoing story and development of our institute.

On the IEG Blog “Writing European History” our researchers shed light on current debates, historical perspectives and new research approaches relating to European history. From transnational interconnections and digital methods to social and religious developments – here we share insights into our projects, guest contributions and reflections on historical topics. Discover exciting articles and join the discussion!
