Forschungsthema: Solidarity as a Resource: Yugoslav Muslims in the Internationalist State
"From the late 1950s until 1992, Yugoslavia was a leading member of the Non-Aligned Movement, which collected most of the new decolonizing states of Africa and Asia, and many of the most important members were Muslim-majority. Yugoslavia's commitment to building connections with these Non-Aligned states provided a means for Yugoslav Muslims to travel through the Islamic world during the Cold War and allowed for the movement of foreign Muslims to Yugoslavia. In this dissertation project, I trace the movement of Yugoslav Muslims globally and ask how internationalist solidarities fed into religious connections, despite the anti-religious position of the Yugoslav state. By considering actors whose investment in the state project was not given, I ask how internationalism is translated by a range of social groups below - or even against - the state."
