Mainz University of Applied Sciences Appoints Thorsten Wübbena to Joint Professorship with the Leibniz Institute of European History
July 1, 2026, Mainz University of Applied Sciences has appointed Thorsten Wübbena to the first joint professorship established in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG). Through the Professorship of Digital Cultural Heritage, the two institutions are further strengthening their long-standing collaboration in Digital Humanities research and teaching.
The professorship is based in the Faculty of Engineering at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. There, Thorsten Wübbena will teach and conduct research in the master’s programme Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies, with a particular focus on data, process, and project management in the humanities. At the same time, he will continue to head the Research Area Digitality of Historical Research and the DH Lab at the IEG.
In his new role, Thorsten Wübbena aims to strengthen critical reflection on the methods, practices, and theories of the Digital Humanities. He is particularly interested in the challenges of working with data and in the complex organisational demands of digital research projects. His goal is to highlight the contribution of the Digital Humanities to addressing key questions facing today’s digital society. His future teaching will focus on decentralised and modular research infrastructures, the modelling of cultural heritage data, and process and project management.
Thorsten Wübbena studied art history, cultural studies, and history. Following positions as a research associate at the universities of Frankfurt, Saarbrücken, and Heidelberg, and after founding a company specialising in database technologies, he headed the Digital Humanities Department at the German Center for Art History Paris from 2014 to 2019. Since 2019, he has led the Research Area Digitality of Historical Research and the DH Lab at the Leibniz Institute of European History.
