The historical research of the Leibniz Institute for European History (IEG) in Mainz spans from the early modern period to contemporary history. It is interdisciplinary, transnational, and international. We highlight key processes that have influenced the past and continue to shape the present. Focusing on issues of social cohesion, religious pluralism, climate change, and digital transformation, we provide historically grounded insights into European opportunities for action, their limits, and alternative paths.
