| "My project analyzes films produced in the Russian Empire that feature actors playing roles of a different gender and film characters cross-dressing or showing signs of non-heterosexual desire. Working with extensive archival material, I map out the possible conventions behind the usage of cross-dressing and cross-gender casting, as well as reconstruct how certain characters were perceived by the early film audience." |
