| "Ariadne’s thread’ follows the submarine telegraph connections of the Ottoman province of the island of Crete, to reconstruct a micro-spatial global history of telegraphy and imperial control in the mid- to late nineteenth century Eastern Mediterranean. By bringing to the fore the local and regional dynamics that co-shaped the region’s integration into the European and global telegraph network, this dissertation questions the perceptions of the Mediterranean of this period as an unhinderedly crossed ‘imperial lake-turned into a lane’. Based on primary sources traced into British, Ottoman, Greek, French and the ITU archives, I investigate the interplay between infrastructure technologies and questions of imperial sovereignty, influence and control over disputed territories." |
