Can eloquence become a weapon in the struggle for freedom?

This question was the focus of a fascinating lecture by Andrew Laird (Brown University) entitled “Projecting Humanity: Rhetoric and Ethnohistory in the Early Atlantic World”. His talk at the IEG explored how rhetoric was far more than just a skill – it was an indispensable tool for proving the humanity of Native Americans and defending their rights against enslavement.

Read a brief summary of this lecture now on the IEG blog “Writing European History / Europäische Geschichte schreiben”.
