"The aim of this research project is to carry out a borderland study of the region between Mikindani, currently in southern Tanzania, and Palma, in northern Mozambique, between ca. 1870 and 1975. During this period, the region was incorporated into various empires/colonial states/countries and consequently underwent several border changes. Over the years, this generated complex social transformations as a result of the political and cultural links that were woven and unravelled according to different configurations. My aim is to study this period of overlapping allegiances: political allegiance to the Sultanate of Zanzibar, to the colonial states (Portugal, Germany and the United Kingdom) and to the independent states (Mozambique and Tanzania), as well as religious, cultural and commercial allegiances linked to the Indian Ocean. This research will focus on the field of border and borderlands studies, using a methodological approach based on trans-imperial history." |
