Forschungsthema: Self-Translation in Renaissance France: Writing Bilingually from Calvin to Descartes.
"This book project will represent the first monographic study of philosophical and scientific self-translation in Renaissance France (c. 1530–1640). Combining close textual analysis and historical contextualization with theoretical insights from contemporary Translation Studies, the book will reconstruct the aims, strategies, and networks of authors who translated their own works across Latin and French (as well as other languages), while also illuminating the impact of their work on historical reading publics. Moving beyond canonical literary figures, the focus of the book will be on a diverse range of “technical” self-translators—including John Calvin, Pierre de la Ramée, Henri Estienne, and Jean Bodin, alongside lesser-known physicians, mathematicians, and naturalists—whose contributions have been largely overlooked. The goal will be to situate Renaissance self-translation not only within period debates on language, authorship, and knowledge production, but also within broader historical processes going on at the time, from religious conflict and political instability to ideological nation-building and monarchical centralization."
