| "Throughout its history, the Portuguese Inquisition was aware of diverse forms of religious dissent, which it nonetheless sometimes set aside in order to focus on repressing crypto-Judaism. This research spans a long-term period, from 1630 to 1821, and investigates how the judicial apparatus rather early on elaborated a genealogy of atheism and religious indifference, which nonetheless always remained in the background. Only from the 1750s onward did the repressive apparatus redeploy these already-stratified theories, mobilizing them in the campaign against the emerging irreligiosity associated with the Enlightenment." |
