| Forschungsthema: | "Changing Tourism. Women and the Transformation of Travel Infrastructures, 1880-1914" |
| "My dissertation examines the relationship between the changing leisure travel practices of German-speaking Central European women and the development of associated travel infrastructures between 1880 and 1914. I argue that women’s increasing participation in leisure travel not only reflected infrastructural developments but also actively shaped them. This was not, however, a straightforward story of ‘progress’ or democratisation. Instead, infrastructural transformations entrenched new hierarchies. Inequality was not removed but reconfigured. My research rests on a variety of primary sources that range from ego-documents (diaries, correspondence) to etiquette and guidebooks to ship, train, and hotel plans, as well as to visual sources such as photographs and print advertisements." |
