This volume presents the proceeding of the first conference of the Dutch, Nordic and American network programme on „Cultural History of Pietism and Revivalism“, held in November 2004 in Dordrecht. The conference was organised by the Huizinga Institute for Cultural History in cooperation with the ReLiC Centre for Dutch Religious History at the VU University in Amsterdam. The papers address issues related to Pietist movements, confessional formation, and theories of confessionalisation. The question whether Pietism should be seen as a consequence of or a reaction to confessionalisation attracts serious attention.
The volume consists of four sections on „Tradition“, „Communication“, „Implementation“ and „Imagination“, covering contributions from Craig Atwood, Claus Bernet, Jürgen Beyer, David B. Eller, John Exalto, Raymond Gillespie, Willem J. op’t Hof, Janis Kreslins, Hartmut Lehmann, Fred van Lieburg, Johan de Niet, Carola Nordbäck, Salvador Ryan, Douglas Shantz, Jonathan Strom, André Swanström, Mary Noll Venables and Peter Vogt.
